Want to put a medical prize in your personal statement! Want to be unique at interview?
Master Medicine is holding its annual medical or dental essay prize! There is often more than winner and it is free to enter.
What do I need to do?
All you have to do is write a 2000-5000 word essay on one of the following topics:
What next after COVID-19? How do you think the UK's healthcare system will change?
What is going to be the most important medical or dental advancement of the next decade?
Essays should be fully referenced in Vancouver or Harvard style - if you need help with this or just don't know what this means, just e-mail us and we can guide you through it!
You should use evidence from recent studies from reputable sources to illustrate and strengthen your points. The best essays will present the opposite side of the argument too. This means you could include evidence that suggests that you might be wrong, and you should evaluate these studies, stating why you think these studies may be less trustworthy or valuable. You don't have to do this for every point, but an acknowledgement of the opposite side of the argument, if it exists, shows a scientific approach to the question.
How will I be marked?
There are a number of things our judges will be looking out for:
Originality - does your answer stand out
Grammar and quality of written English
Appropriate and accurate referencing
Use of reputable sources and studies is very important.
Structure of the essay
You will NOT be marked on the length of the essay as long as it is within 2000-5000 words.
Can I ask for help?
Of course! We are always happy to help and this task is about learning and increasing your knowledge to apply for medical or dental school. We are not expecting you to be perfect already! You will absolutely not be judged for asking for help - only on your final essay! Ask us anything!
How do I enter?
Send your finished essay to . You should include your full name and contact details so we can let you know if you win!
When is the deadline?
The deadline is 31st July 2021 at 12pm. The winner will be announced around 2 -3 weeks later, depending on the number of entries.
And most importantly, what do I win?!
Winners will receive a batch of medical or dental school application books (you may choose medical or dental!) including interview skills, personal statement writing guidance and UCAT practise questions. Most importantly, you will receive a certificate proving you won the competition, personally signed by our judges, who are all GMC registered UK doctors. This will be important to take to your university interviews!
